Polyurethane Varnish in Microcement

The Importance of Polyurethane Varnish in the Application of Microcement

POLYURETHANE VARNISH MICROCEMENT – Applying microcement is a technical process that requires precise steps to ensure a flawless result. In addition to the microcement layers, including the base and fine finish, two crucial complementary stages are essential:

  1. Bonding Primer: Enhances the adhesion of microcement to the base surface.
  2. Polyurethane Varnish: Optimizes the final finish, providing resistance and durability.

Main Functions of Polyurethane Varnish

Polyurethane varnish is key to protecting and enhancing microcement surfaces, thanks to its properties:

  • Waterproofing: Shields against moisture.
  • Scratch Resistance: Increases the surface’s durability.
  • Easy Maintenance: Creates a protective film for effortless cleaning.

Types de Vernis

There are two main types of varnish:

  • Water-Based: The most widely used today due to its low environmental impact. It offers a high-quality finish and is less prone to roller marks.
  • Solvent-Based: While slightly more durable, its usage is declining due to environmental concerns. It’s also more susceptible to application imperfections.

Application of Polyurethane Varnish

To maximize the performance of polyurethane varnish, follow these recommendations:

  1. Ensure a Dry Surface

    • Microcement layers must be completely dry before applying the varnish.
    • A damp surface can compromise drying and the technical properties of microcement.
  2. Varnish Application

    • Use a short-pile roller, avoiding puddling.
    • Respect the drying time specified by the manufacturer, typically between 12 and 24 hours.
  3. Ambient Conditions

    • Recommended temperature: 20 °C.
    • Low relative humidity ensures uniform drying.
  4. Time Between Coats

    • Although the first coat may feel dry to the touch, internal chemical reactions continue for hours.
    • Ensure proper curing before applying the second coat.
  5. Initial Care

    • Maximum varnish resistance is achieved approximately one month after application.
    • During the first few weeks:
      • Avoid water contact.
      • Do not drag objects or place heavy or sharp items.
